Lenten Fasting & Abstinence

Catholics practice fasting and abstinence during the season of Lent in remembrance of Jesus’ suffering and in anticipation of the joy of Easter.

Together with increased prayer and works of charity, fasting is a way to help make Lent a fruitful time of purification and refocus, leading to a deeper intimacy with and tender dependency upon God.

The minimum requirements for all Catholics are:

  • FAST on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
  • ABSTINENCE every Friday during Lent AND on above fast days.

To fast means consuming one meal, meatless. Two smaller meals which together do not equal a full meal may be included.

Abstinence means refraining from all flesh meats including beef, poultry, pork, and other mammals. Seafood, eggs, and dairy are permissible.

Exceptions

Those outside the age requirements, those physically, mentally, or chronically ill, and pregnant or nursing mothers are excused. Those so afflicted are encouraged to choose a different sacrifice to foster spiritual growth during this season.

Liturgy of the Hours

Before each Mass during Lent, the Lay Carmelites will lead the Liturgy of the Hours, the time-honored communal prayer of the Church.

  • ALL20 min. before each Mass

The Feast of Divine Mercy

The Divine Mercy

In her Diary, St. Faustina records a special promise given to her by Jesus. “My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy” (699).

In three places in her Diary, St. Faustina records our Lord’s promises of specific, extraordinary graces:

  • “I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My mercy” (1109).
  • “Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment” (300).
  • “The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion will obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment” (699).

To receive these graces, the only condition is to receive Holy Communion worthily on Divine Mercy Sunday (or the Vigil celebration) by making a good confession beforehand, staying in the state of grace, and trusting in His Divine Mercy.

By these conditions, our Lord is emphasizing the value of confession and Holy Communion as miracles of mercy. The Eucharist is Jesus, Himself, the Living God, longing to pour Himself as Mercy into our hearts.

In addition, our Lord says through St. Faustina that we are to perform acts of mercy:

  • “Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, but there must also be acts of mercy” (742).
  • “The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that is trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive” (1578).

The Feast of Divine Mercy on Divine Mercy Sunday

We will celebrate the Feast by a live recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet at Queen of Angels on Sunday, Apr. 7 at 2:45 pm. The church will open at 2:30 pm. Please bring your personal images of Divine Mercy to be blessed as part of the service.

To obtain all the graces offered by Jesus, we must:

  • Celebrate the Feast of Divine Mercy on the Sunday after Easter.
  • Sincerely repent of all sins.
  • Place complete trust in Jesus.
  • Make a good confession, any day from 20 days before Apr. 7 to 20 days after.
  • Receive Holy Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday.
  • Venerate the Divine Mercy image on Divine Mercy Sunday.
  • Be merciful to others through our actions, words, and prayers:
    • Merciful word | Forgiving and comforting words
    • Merciful deed | Any of the corporal works of mercy.
    • Merciful prayer | Prayers for mercy for the whole world

Special Announcements

Did you know?

In Tanzania, children born with a disability are often kept locked up in homes, hidden away from public. It is a common belief that a child with a disability is cursed – or that his or her family did something wrong and are being punished by evil spirits or God. Because of this, many fathers and family members will abandon their wife and child upon the birth of a baby with a disability – leaving a woman to support herself and her children.

Most children with disabilities are not allowed to attend government schools.

local missionaries serve Tanzanian children

St. Joseph parishioner Anna Johnson is currently serving as a Maryknoll Lay Missioner with her husband, Kyle, and three children in Mwanza, Tanzania on a multi-year mission.

Maryknoll, a Catholic non-profit mission movement, has been the heart and hands of the U.S. Catholic Church’s overseas mission work for more than 100 years. Anna currently ministers as a nurse at Huruma Special Education Unit. “Huruma” means compassion in Swahili. This school was founded in 2004 by another Maryknoll Lay Missioner, Bertha Haas. It currently serves over 65 children with disabilities.

Huruma School offers these children a chance to learn, receive basic medical care and physical therapy, and eat simple but nutritious meals 4 times/week. For many of these children and their families – Huruma literally changes their life from being invisible and neglected – to being seen and cared for.

Huruma School runs 100% on donations – the majority of these coming from Catholic Churches in the Northwest where founder Bertha Haas currently resides. 100% of your donation goes to support Huruma School (no overhead or administrative costs as we are run by an all-volunteer team).

Archdiocese News

Partners in the Gospel UPDATES

Partners in the Gospel is a strategic pastoral planning effort taking place across the Archdiocese of Seattle to re-invigorate and renew our local Catholic Church. The Archdiocese continues their work to communicate and address the urgent need for change.

Our Parish Family

  • Our parish family will include St. Joseph in Sequim; St. Anne in Forks, St. Thomas the Apostle Mission in Clallam Bay, St. Mary Star of the Sea in Port Townsend, and Queen of Angels in Port Angeles.
  • This new family will go into effect on July 1, 2024.
  • Over the next three years, the five churches will come together to eventually become one canonical parish.
  • This does not mean just one church building or campus.
  • The pastor and parochial vicars for this parish family will be announced later this spring, and they will begin July 1.
  • Currently, the plan is for one pastor and two parochial vicars.
  • Once the new pastor is in place he will work in consultation with the Archdiocese on any changes to Mass times, councils, services, staffing etc. This does not mean that there will be changes.
  • The Archdiocese will provide a “new parish family liaison” to help with the transition.

What parishioners can do

  • Continue to pray for this renewal effort, and specifically pray for the members of our new parish family. Look to what role you can play in making our new parish family succeed. We have prayer cards in the church and office for you to take home.
  • Lastly, please stay engaged:
    • Sign up for the Partners in the Gospel UPDATE newsletter (scroll to the bottom of that page to sign up).
    • Read Northwest Catholic magazine (registered parishioners receive this subscription for free; you can also read online)
    • Participate in upcoming prayer and fellowship opportunities.
    • If you have questions or comments about this process, please visit the Partners in the Gospel website – https://archseattle.org/partners/ Check here and in the bulletin for updates on our parish family, or contact our office with questions or comments:(360)457-2351 or email office@clallamcatholic.org.

Important Dates

  • Feb. 3-4: Final parish family plan released.
  • July 2024: Parish families, under the leadership of one pastor, will begin.

Called to Serve as Christ Campaign

Begun in 2019, this campaigns funds retirement and medical needs of priests and women religious, and supports individual parishes in our Archdiocese. Starting in Oct. 2020, a three-year pledge period began. Each parish will receive a share of funds donated.

Thank you so much for your generosity! With their share, Queen of Angels will upgrade the school heating; St. Joseph will make needed remodels to the rectory. Click the button below to learn more or add your pledge today!
